PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
Hi, I’m Barbara. I’m an alternative wedding photographer based in North London. I specialise in fun, relaxed, non traditional weddings. I love confetti, glitter, flowers, cake, hilarious speeches, live music and photographing people having a great time. Oh, and I’m French but I’m nice.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
The urge to pursue my passion for photography and the feeling that I would never be fulfilled in a nine to five job. Besides, I wanted to be my own boss and learn new skills.
HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
I don’t have a typical day! One of the main reasons I wanted to become a wedding photographer was to avoid routine! When you are self-employed and you do everything yourself, there is always something to be done. But it’s fantastic to be able to organise your day exactly the way you want. The challenge is to manage to get some life/work balance especially when working from home!
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
There are so many but I’d say ‘variety’. Every single wedding is different and every couple is unique. I never know what to expect, I just go with the flow, fully immersed in the event and enjoying every moment of it.
AND WHAT IS THE WORST PART?
The business side.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
‘Be yourself, everyone else is already taken’. This quote by Oscar Wilde really helped me when I started out. I was trying to learn the ‘right way’ to photograph a wedding and after a while, I realised that I hated posing and flash photography. So I decided to follow my own judgment and ‘do it my way’.
WHAT WOULD YOU WANT COUPLES TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I tell the story of your day in a quirky way and I capture people being themselves. There is no formal posing or staging, only real moments. And, I focus on people having fun. In case you are thinking ‘that sounds great but I’m sure I’m going to feel awkward in front of the camera especially for portraits’, don’t worry, most people feel that way until we actually work together!
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
Your wedding, your way! Make your wedding day as meaningful and personal as you like. Spend your money on what matters to you. Delegate as much as possible. And on the actual day, whatever happens, enjoy every minute of it as it will go very quickly.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU DIDN’T WORK IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY?
I can’t imagine doing anything else! Working with happy people on a very important day of their lives, recording their emotions and taking beautiful pictures for them: I can’t think of a better job!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR TIME OFF?
I love watching films and going to see fringe shows and live comedy. I also love travelling and discovering new places.
Either sightseeing in Asia or renting a big house with a swimming pool somewhere in Italy for my family and friends to enjoy.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
I can’t even imagine myself in a year’s time! If I had been told when I was still employed that I would become a wedding photographer, I would have said: ‘Really???’. Life is full of surprises and I like surprises.
