ÅSA AND NINA’S VIKING WEDDING IN SWEDEN

What a wonderful, original wedding with gorgeous brides and viking traditions was sent over by Tove Lundquist !! I absolutely love how Åsa and Nina used their common interest to create this original day and their friends and family joined the celebrations in a true Viking style.

HOW DID YOU MEET?

We had been in the same meditation group for a year when we became a couple. We had found the other one attractive but not done anything about it since we were both in other relationships at the time. But when we finally let our emotions guide us, there was no return. Within two months we were living together.

We got engaged in the ruin of St Gerthrud’s church. It didn’t turn out to be as romantic as we planned. The idea was to have a cozy picnic and make a ceremony around the ring exchange. But we barely had time to unpack the food before the children (age 4, 6 and 9 at the time) needed to go to the toilet. So a quick ring exchange and a half bad group photo, then off to find a toilet…

CEREMONY AND RECEPTION LOCATIONS

The wedding ceremony and party was held in a viking village, just outside the town of Löddeköpinge in the south of Sweden; Vikingatider

TELL US ABOUT THE DAY! WHAT WAS THE THEME, INSPIRATION, THE MOST IMPORTANT AND MOST FUN PART FOR YOU?

Since our big common interest is viking reenactment, the choice of wedding theme was easy. We chose to also include medieval and fantasy, to make the selection of clothes more flexible. We made ours and the children’s clothes ourselves. Åsa’s dress is viking style, Nina and the girls wore fantasy themed dresses and our son’s clothes were inspired by a medieval knight.

The guests got invited to a 40+40 birthday party. The wedding was a surprise for all except our parents. But most of the guests had figured out what was about to happen.

Nothing went as planned! The weather reports kept giving us contradictory information and we kept our fingers crossed for no rain. Most of the activities were supposed to take place outside –  welcome drinks, surprise wedding, a fun quiz and the possibility to try different Viking games. But when the rain was still pouring down 30 minutes before the guests were arriving, we had to quickly change the plans. We ended up having the ceremony under a temporary canvas roof. But everybody thought it was a wonderful wedding and didn’t notice that we had changed everything in a panic just before.

The registrar is a close friend of ours; Johanna Stjerndahl. She is also a silversmith and has made the rings after our sketches. We wrote the ceremony ourselves, with inspiration from the book “Conversations with God” where they describe a rose ceremony.

The party was held in the Viking village’s large longhouse, witch we filled to the last seat. The tables in there are unfortunately very narrow and didn’t give us much room for decorations. We choose long branches of ivy only. The place cards were written in runes. We handed out a program and fun information about all the guests.
